Addressing Concerns about NC State’s Relationship with RPD

NC State Community,

Over the past few days, our offices have received several concerns about NC State’s relationship with the Raleigh Police Department. We thank you, we hear you and we appreciate all in our community who care about these important issues and have taken time to express their concerns.

First and foremost, we join you in denouncing and condemning the lethal force used by police against George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and many others. We join in the call for the immediate end of police violence against Black people all across our country.

There have been recent calls for NC State to cut ties with the Raleigh Police Department (RPD). It is important to clarify that NC State has its own independent, fully sworn and equipped police department trained and dedicated to serve the university community. The NC State University Police Department is the first responder to campus emergencies, patrols university property, investigates crimes, delivers safety education programs on campus and enforces North Carolina law.

A key difference with the NC State police is that its officers and dispatchers (NC State operates and staffs its own 911 center) are members of, and trained specifically to work with and support, the campus community. NC State police is accredited by the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators. Less than 40 university police departments nationally hold this accreditation.

Another key difference is the training our officers receive to help assist members of our community who may be in need of support and the communication and outreach we provide. We are dedicated to keeping our campus safe, and work closely with campus community partners – including students – to cultivate an environment where all members of the Wolfpack are treated with dignity and respect.

NC State Police Department does have Mutual Aid Agreements with the Raleigh Police Department and many other agencies for the purposes of sharing information and for cases where outside support is needed. For example, any incidents that would require a bomb squad, hazmat team or unusually large emergency response rely on mutual aid to help keep NC State safe. ss和ssr有什么不同? The mutual aid agreements also provide NC State police expanded jurisdiction into the larger community to better serve NC state students who live in off-campus housing, including responding to the needs of student victims of off-campus crimes.

Through best practices, transparency, and effective communication, we strive to meet the needs of the NC State community. We welcome opportunities to explore issues, address concerns and improve our services. Along those lines, we are working to schedule a town hall meeting with the campus community in the weeks ahead. The NC State University Police Department also has reporting services available online, allowing anyone to communicate with the police department at any time. Please consider exploring our services at http://police.ehps.ncsu.edu/.

We are committed to creating and maintaining the safest possible physical environment on campus and look forward to building even stronger working relationships with our students, faculty and staff.

Sincerely,

Dave Rainer, Associate Vice Chancellor, Environmental Health and Public Safety

We are proud to be accredited by both the Commission on Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) and by the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators.  Less than 40 university police departments nationally are accredited; we are the first university police department in North Carolina to be accredited by both organizations.
